★ Movie Story-line: Maybe no Indian film released in 2022 sans RRR and KGF2 has arrived in theatres with the ungodly hype that accompanied Mani Ratnam's" Ponniyin Selvan I". Grounded on the cult 1955 book series by Kalki Krishnamurthy,  numerous icons like MGR and Kamal Hassan have tried to recreate the magnum number on screen but it took a visionary of Mani Ratnam's quality to eventually bring the design to consummation. With an ensemble cast and an exceptional specialized crew backing him, the master director weaves his magic wand to produce an immensely pleasurable period spectacle, albeit with its share of minor bumps and excrescencies.   

Set in the 10th century during the times when the Chola dynasty ruled over the utmost of South India, Karthi stars as" Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan", commander to the crown  Napoleon Aditha Karikaalan( Vikram), and his trip to fulfill a set of tasks his liege lord sets out for him. Assigned with dismembering an inflammatory conspiracy brewing within the area, the loyal Vandiyadevan embarks on a laborious trip, with aid of the queen Kundavai( Trisha) as well as Karikaalan's youngish family, the nominal" Ponniyin Selvan"( meaning Son of the swash Ponni, played by Jayam Ravi).

A R Rahman's music is unfortunately largely rambler with only the BGM composed for Trisha's character creating any real impact. The film also indulges in setting up too numerous effects for its alternate part and meanders pointlessly for large portions post the interval. The climax showdown which was intended as a brutal skirmish does not come across convincingly, reducing the impact of the immersive politicking and mind games that led up to it. In short, PS- 1 score high in its drama rudiments while floundering to be satisfying during its trick sequences. nonetheless, the meticulous worldbuilding, its clutch of ace performances and the position of political conspiracy Mani Ratnam has managed to inoculate into the liar make PS- 1 a recommended watch in theatres! Can not stay for the alternate part, set to release in 2023!
